BMW has begun preparing the next generation X1 to be sold as a 2016 model. This isn’t merely a facelift but a complete change in chassis. BMW has replaced the RWD based chassis with the MINI UKL chassis which is FWD based and shared with the 2 series Active Tourer. Despite this, the only model being released as of yet will be an xDrive28i with a 2 liter turbo four cylinder with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque mated to an 8 speed automatic. It’s 0-60 time is reported to be 6.3 seconds, which is certainly quick especially compared to other cars in the same class. There’s no word on a FWD model for the US, but there are going to be a multitude of diesel and FWD sDrive models for Europe.

The higher SUV styling of the new 2016 X1 more resembles the X3 and X5 than before, and presumably this is going to mean a higher (by 36mm) seating position for the interior. Speaking of the interior, the design is going to continue the theme of the driver-centric angled dash, accentuated by either a 6.5 inch or 8.8 inch iDrive display, with the latter being equipped with navigation. Extended leather upholstery and a 12 speaker Harmon Kardon speaker system. Space has been improved in every aspect, which seems to be what BMW was going for in switching platforms.

There will be three different lines available for the new X1, similar to what is offered on other X vehicles. There will be an xLine package, Sport Line package, and of course an M Sport package. Many purists may frown at the idea of a FWD BMW, but it makes a lot of sense for people who don’t use the full capabilities that xDrive offers. For the economical buyer who doesn’t need those features the sDrive models also offer lower fuel consumption. Personally, I think the new X1 is a very good looking car that fits it’s niche well. I’ll just take mine in AWD with the M Sport package. Which one would you pick?
